Everyone needs a good neighbour – #NewYearNewUs

The Big Lunch is part of Eden Project Communities – which have been running since 2009 with the sole purpose of bringing people together. As part of #NewYearNewUs, they told us about why everyone needs good neighbours, and why 2020 is the year to make new connections, and reach out to those living near you.

If you’ve ever felt those new beginnings and big life changes weren’t all they were cracked up to be, you’re not alone. Facing a new year stretching out before you, particularly with changes like moving to a new area or becoming a new parent, can actually be pretty overwhelming. In fact, big life changes can dislocate us from our normal places, routines and networks and, if left unchecked, can lead to feelings of loneliness.

Adjusting to new beginnings, or changes in circumstances, can be supported by taking a few simple steps to create connections with people living locally. In fact, your neighbours and community offer the most amazing opportunities to meet people and make new friendships. But how do you find a way to approach people who are busy with their own lives?

“It was amazing, straight away four of my neighbours got in touch to say they’d love to help.”

Sasha moved into her new-build community in the summer of 2018, where everyone was new and all the neighbours were complete strangers. Sasha was passionate about changing that, so when she heard about The Big Lunch on breakfast TV she sprang into action. “It was amazing, straight away four of my neighbours got in touch to say they’d love to help. It started, and just grew and grew!” 150 new residents came together to share food and get to know each other a little better, and now they’re planning for next year as new friends.

Laura attended an Eden Community Camp and left inspired to hold a Big Lunch. Upon arriving home, she heard the news of the Manchester Arena attack, which made her more determined than ever to bring her street together. She handwrote letters to everyone on her street, introducing herself and explaining that she wanted to get to know those she lived near to. “I had two people within about half an hour knock on my door and wave the letter at me and say ‘Aw this is really nice! It’s nice to meet you.’”  Three years later and Spencer Road Big Lunch has gone from strength to strength and Laura feels more rooted in her community.

“Everyone needs a good neighbour, someone nearby who they can call on for the little things, the bigger things, or just a chat over a cuppa.”

The Big Lunch is just the excuse you need. Why? Because everyone needs a good neighbour, someone nearby who they can call on for the little things, the bigger things, or just a chat over a cuppa. You’ll be doing them a favour, and yourself one too. All you need to do is knock on your neighbours’ doors and invite them to plan a Big Lunch with you – it’s something that you, and they, can enjoy together. You’ll discover that it’s a fantastic way to get to know people and can be excellent for your wellbeing too. Having something to actively plan gives you a creative outlet, and having a future event in the diary also gives you something to look forward to.

What better way to start a new year than with a fresh idea to get new connections started! Order your free Big Lunch pack today and get to know your neighbours this year.
