New Year, New Us

This new year, let’s focus on making more meaningful connections with our community and those around us.

Let’s make 2020 the year of community, connections and conversation. #NewYearNewUs

Let’s make new connections

You could start volunteering, join a local club or get to know your neighbours.

Start the new year by giving something back to your community, and tackling loneliness along the way.

It could even be a chat with someone at the bus stop on your way to work or to the local shop. Small moments matter, and can make a huge difference to someone who is feeling lonely.

Let’s switch on to those around us

For others, it could start by switching off from social media and switching on to those around them. Technology is great, but it will never replace the power of human connection.

“Researchers found that students who limited their use of [social media] to 30 minutes a day for three weeks had significant reductions in loneliness.”

We want to help create a kinder, friendlier country. We want people to feel part of their communities and better connected with the people around them.

We think that spending less time on our phones is a great way to do that.

Let’s reconnect

New year is often seen as a time for self-improvement, but sometimes the best way to improve ourselves is to spend less time online, and more time with other people.

Because whilst New Years can be a time for new beginnings, it’s also a time for reflection.

Making new connections and switching on to those around you is great, but the New Year can also be a time to reconnect with those who you may have lost touch with.

Reach out to that friend you’ve lost touch with, or check in on your older relatives all year round, and not just at Christmas.

New Year, New Us

Over the next month we’re going to be sharing some hints and tips to help people make more meaningful connections in their community this year.

We’ve also got a series of blogs from some of the amazing people and organisations across the UK who are tackling loneliness and inspiring people to connect.

Over to you

Now we want to hear from you.

What New Year’s resolutions have you made this year to #BeMoreUs?

How are you planning to be more connected to your community and reach out to those around you in 2020?

You can also request to join our new Facebook Be More Us Group – where you can share your stories and ideas for how we can all connect.
